A Once in a Lifetime…Hopefully

Last night we had severe storms come through our area. D was out on the front step while I was making his dinner. He came back into the house and said he was watching a cool cloud. I looked out the window and, holy cow…I knew what it was. I turned off the stove and headed outside.

This was a huge developing rotating funnel cloud. It was so heavy and close enough to the ground that it creeped me out yet, I was so drawn to it and couldn’t stop watching and recording. This funnel cloud was developing right in our front yard and there was nothing you could do to stop it.  It demanded respect.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do if it reached to the ground in front of us. We could see the direction it was traveling. And it was almost straight east. So I didn’t feel too threatened…although my phone was going off. One alert after another to take shelter. But we had our eye on it.

It was the oddest of storms. The funnel moved slowly and very quietly. Tornado sirens were blaring. Birds were singing. Frogs, chirping. Raindrops were falling on us. The sun was shining in the west. And there was a rainbow shining to the north of the funnel. All happening at the same time.

The rainbow barely shows in this photo

Apparently, this became a tornado and did touch ground not too long after it left us.

I’m glad I witnessed this…once. I don’t need to be that close ever again.

We have more severe storms coming tonight which are forecast to be more severe than yesterday’s. This is the only part of spring I dislike.

Be safe wherever you are.

  1. my goodness Andi, that is a sight to behold. you are like a storm catcher with these amazing photos.

i feel badly whenever these things pop up, we had a very brief and small one touch down here during an evening in February but it did some pretty real damage to the lines and other properties near me. the warm weather, for some reason, seems to move its preferred set of places to the north of me.

i hope this will be the last one you see for a long time! Mike

    1. I could feel its power for sure. And I know how easily lives are lost and property is destroyed. It just hung there moving so slowly. It felt so heavy and I wondered how it could stay up in the sky. It was an experience I’ll never forget, but one I never want to be near again. It makes me feel weird to think of something like that outside your home in the night. At least we could see where it was and where it was moving. Thanks for your comment, Michael!
