Oh, To Be A Little Again

It wasn’t that long ago when the much anticipated Sears Christmas Wish Book would arrive in the mail just before the holidays. I would be beyond excited as I turned each page to see what I might wish for. I’d circle each toy and then as I got older I’d write them down on my Christmas list.

1961 edition, the year I was born.

Even though I rarely received the items I marked, my excitement never derailed. Every year that catalog brought magical moments to me and my siblings. Good, warm memories.

The Wish Book has long been retired as Sears is no longer the Sears of yesterday. That goes for many of the stores we once visited in shopping malls.

Today, everyone is into shopping online. It’s convenient and fast. And we all want fast nowadays. But it surely doesn’t have the same appeal to me as shopping through a catalog and then calling a service representative to manually take my order.

Amazon has changed our world for sure. I know things aren’t going to go back to those good ole days so I need to accept the changes, although often I do reluctantly.

Today I received the Amazon Kids Gift Book. Belle, my granddaughter, found my old 2025 catalog a couple of weeks ago and got just as excited over it as I once did with the Sears Wish Book. She marked her favorite toys and then helped her brothers mark theirs.

What a fun little catalog this is. It is filled not only with a wishlist full of toys but fun activities too. Almost like a Highlights magazine. While this Holiday Book is not near as big as my precious Wish Book was, it is certainly well made. I will give them that.

Tomorrow, my Littles will be here. I can’t wait for them to see this new book. As I watch them turn each page, I’ll be filled with their excitement just as though it were mine all those years ago. And for one hot minute, I’ll be a Little again.

I’m a mom of six amazing kids. They have blessed me with six grandchildren. I love the outdoors. I am a country girl through and through. There I find a closeness with God and am inspired. Writing is my passion.

  1. I miss those days too . My parents used to take us downtown to see the Marshall field windows and to see Santa. It was the highlight of the holidays. We took our kids there a couple of times but after Marshall Fields was sold to Macy’s it just wasn’t the same anymore.
