Christmas in July

It is the middle of July already. I was just telling D that Christmas will be here before we know it and that I’m not ready to hall all that stuff out again. I also told him I need to go through my holiday stuff and get rid of much of it so I can minimize Christmas and make it simpler and easier. Put up one tree and that’s it. Period. It was my intention to go through it all within the next couple of weeks.

But then I discovered the Hallmark channel celebrates Christmas in July with its new Christmas movies and holiday movies that stream nonstop. Cock my head and raise my eyebrows.

Just listening to the Christmas songs in the movies alone has brought such peace over me. During our homeschooling years, I’d be in the our classroom during the summer creating my new plans for the coming school year. I loved that time of year. It was as exciting to me as Christmas. The back-to-school aisles in Walmart were (still are!) as exciting as walking through the ornament aisle at Christmastime.

Since our classroom was located in the loft, it was not unusual for the sound of Christmas to be ringing throughout our home in the heat of summer. Christmas in July is not strange to me. In fact, I embrace it.

Now I need to reevaluate this whole going-through-Christmas-stuff birdbrained idea of mine. Maybe I could thin it out a teeny bit. Just a teeny-weeny bit.

Life is short, so I say keep the happy things alive in your heart all the year long. Isn’t this similar to what Scrooge said after he had a change of heart? Celebrating Christmas in July is harmless. It fills me with happiness to reminisce about the Christmases I once shared with my parents and siblings, the magical Christmases with my own children, and of the Christmases yet to come. I see this as a wonderful blessing of hope, joy, and peace…but mostly, of love.
