A fellow blogger, Cindi of God Still Speaks Today, gave me something to think about with her last two posts. My body reflects my anxiety and stresses of daily life. I hold tension in my jaw, upper back, and in my hips. I recall during Lamaze classes, forty-four years ago, we moms were instructed to keep our eyes open during labor to keep things moving along. Closed eyes slowed progress. I never paid attention to closed hands.
Below are links to Cindi’s blog posts about palms up, and my post is based off of her thoughts.

It will take a while to make “palms up” a habit, but I believe it will be worth it. I think palms up and patience go hand-in-hand. I’ve really been working on patience lately and trying not rush to conclusions when others don’t respond to me quickly or do in a “tone” I didn’t expect. Their response, or no response, is not always a reflection of their relationship with me. Life has its special challenges for every single person. And, texting, most certainly, is easily misinterpreted. Patience.
Palms up when speaking with someone, especially face to face, seems to relax you in such a way that it allows patience to work. Just as Cindi relayed in her above posts, once she realized her hands were closed during questioning in a hearing, she opened her hands to palms up. She relaxed a bit. Tension was relieved. Then she was able to think more clearly before vocalizing her responses. And she gave quite intelligent responses.

Life is full of conflicts, stresses, and misunderstandings. Communication is crucial for healthy relationships and in conversing with anyone, publicly or privately. Perhaps with palms open and up, and speaking with a little more kindness, consideration, and patience will lead us to a better understanding of one another…even if it’s just a one-and-done conversation.
Our world will never be perfect, but maybe it could be just a little bit better.

What a great post, Andy.. both you and Cindi. Gonna hafta remember that. Loved her almost-zinger “No, but I play one on TV.” 😂 And Lamaze class… whoo boy, that brings me back. My wife read “What to expect when you’re expecting” so many times, it got tattered and dog-eared…but in the end, it all worked out like it always does. 😎😉🙏
