Jesus

Tomorrow is Easter Sunday, and while Christ’s resurrection should be the highlight of every single day, many will celebrate this blessed event which occurred about 2,000 years ago.

I watched the Passion of Christ many years ago. I still have the DVD although I have not been able to watch it since. I was moved to tears. I felt his agony. My heart pained deeply that Jesus bore the heaviness of my sins long before I was ever born.

Every sin of every human, from creation to the end of time, was laid upon his back as he dragged that cross to Golgotha. But he did it. He was beaten and spat upon. Flesh was ripped out of his back by a cat o’ nine tails. A mock crown of thorns was placed upon his head and then beaten down into his skull. Bruised, beaten, and bloodied, Jesus willingly took all the evil mankind could possibly conjure up, past, present, and future, and wore it all before God.

And his Father had to look away.

As Jesus hung there before God, filthy from our sins, he still pleaded with his Father to forgive us.

Jesus knows what it is to be human. He walked this earth among us for 33 years. He felt our pain and sorrow. He knew the human side of all of our emotions. He also knew we would fail again and again, yet he wanted to give us this blessed gift of redemption. His blood was the only thing pure enough to do it. And Jesus gave it willingly.

Jesus’s birth was miraculous and we enjoy celebrating it. But Jesus’s death is most remarkable of all. No historical event will ever surpass Christ’s death and resurrection. Nothing will ever be more meaningful. Nothing else can give us hope.

Just as I hold tight to these precious signs of spring, honoring Jesus’s resurrection should also be an awakening. A revival, of sorts. A time to move forward in a newness of life.

Be ever so grateful to Jesus for his compassion, love, and grace.

  1. I saw the Passion of the Christ in the theatre…it’s the only movie I ever attended where the audience left in complete and utter silence, most with a stricken look. Don’t know if you ever read about all the weird things that happened during filming, but it seems something was very determined to prevent its production and release.
