Looking Through a Screen

a coyote, from an unscreened window, January 2, 2026

I lived my whole life with screens in all of the windows, in all of the houses I’ve ever lived.

Until now.

I really never even thought there was an option of leaving screens out. But then I am more of an open window kinda gal. I prefer open windows to air conditioning. Fresh air in. Critters out.

D prefers windows closed. AC on. No screens, because screens distort the views of the outdoors.

Granted, we live in an area that flourishes with wildlife. Yesterday, D saw an a bobcat walking along the edge of the woods. He saw it through an unscreened window.

I understand that everything outside is currently some dirty shade of brown. And I understand that the bobcat would have been much harder to distinguish through a screened window.

Thankfully, this marriage is filled with compromises. We both bend, without breaking. When two people marry later in life, well, compromise is a must for keeping peace and being happy.

In the spring, screens go in. In the fall, screens come out. I can open the windows at my leisure. Winter views, I admit, are crisp and clear.

This morning I was looking through the office window which does have a screen in it. I don’t think D looks out that window as much as others so it didn’t bother him to leave it in. As I was looking out, I saw something in the distance. Was it an animal? Or, was it a mound of dried up weeds? I couldn’t tell because there was a screen in the window which distorted my vision.

Huh…maybe D’s onto something here.

This made me think of our lives and the beliefs we hold as truth. What screen do we look through when it comes to our personal political views, our religious beliefs, or even our relationships?

What is really on the other side of that screen? Do we have a distorted view of truth? Do we not fully understand someone because we can’t see/ understand them clearly? Do we make something up because of something we think we see? I could easily have said I saw a coyote this morning when there actually wasn’t.

And when we are confronted with a different vision of what we believe we saw, do we listen? Are we open to discussion?

Just food for thought this morning.

Yay, March 1st! I’m glad January and February are behind us now and spring will officially begin this month. This girl has spring fever and cannot wait to open up these windows. 😉
