The Storm Approaches

Indiana, along with many other states, are in line with a very serious winter storm. Of course, this is what the weather people are saying. The storm itself has changed to some degree. Our snow total is now 8-12 inches. That total was upped overnight from 4-5 inches. Our windchill temperatures though will be in the negative digits. But I think the most severe weather could be south of us due to extreme ice conditions. Accumulating ice could drop power lines. I also hear that the east coast could possibly receive a whopping 1-2 feet of snow. Right now, it is the calm before the storm.

Silly me…I get a little excited in anticipation of getting snowed in, even though I already spend all my time at home. When I had kids with me, I made sure we had the necessities…and also extra fun treats. I’d imagine the movies we’d watch or the books I’d read.

This is winter. And with winter, snow and ice are to be expected.  But each storm presents challenges. Some challenges are simply buying milk, eggs, and bread. Others are focused on finding a generator for possible loss of electricity and heat.

We have forecasters who can detect storm activity days in advance. So we prepare. Usually on the days prior to the predicted storm. But we are faced with “storms” in every season of our life and on any given day. Some come without warning. How do we prepare for those? Well, having a good relationship with Jesus is the best start.

Worrying about “storms” that could possibly happen in the future is futile. Worrying steals present moments that are sacred. Worry steals our sleep and our energy. We cannot know all the variables in what if’s. And statistically, what if’s never happen.

But again, the best way to prepare for future life-storms is having a closeness with God. He knows what each of us needs in our life for his purpose and our spiritual wellbeing.

This doesn’t mean we don’t sometimes get hurt. There should be an understanding that with every life-storm is a life-lesson tucked inside. We have faith though, that no matter what, God is in control. He sees the much bigger picture. Often we do not grasp the concept of the lesson for a long time. Sometimes years. Then suddenly, it just makes sense. Trust Jesus to know what’s the best outcome for your life.

Prepare for the storms of life without dedicating time and energy to worry. Trust Jesus.

  1. There is a beauty to relaxing and enjoying the snow. especially big snowfalls like the one we’re all about to experience. I can’t articulate it but it’s one of the best experiences life can offer.

But of course, it has its problems. so do be safe with the weather and the ice.

It’s so cool to read that you’re from Indiana. my family’s history starts out in the midwest and i have family there. It is the best kept secret in America – a quiet paradise!

enjoy the snow and be safe. Mike

    1. I’m originally from Waukegan, IL, but my dad transferred to Fort Wayne with IBM in my junior year of high school. I live in west central Indiana now. This is where I raised my kids. Indiana is a beautiful place to live. The landscape varies and is gorgeous no matter what season.

  2. our story predictions have changed over the last 3 days. The times that it’s going to start whether we’re going to get snow or ice and how long it’s going to last. The latest update now is we’re going to get the ice. It would much rather have the 5 to 10 inches of snow then the quarter to an inch of ice. Stay warm and be safe.
