My Girl, Nyx

How I love this girl of mine. She is my shadow, my companion. She’s by my side all through the day.

enjoying the warmth of the cabin

Nyx gets excited when I ask her if she wants to go to the cabin. She immediately gets up and waits for me to open the basement door. She always beats me down the stairs. She’s even come close to knocking me down the stairs. We walk the stretch of the basement to the door that takes us outdoors. Once outside she does her business as I walk the short distance to the cabin. Then she joins me in the cabin. During warm months she stays outside. That’s where she, and I, prefer.

But no matter where she is, she keeps a vigilant eye to my whereabouts and what I’m doing. When I’m in the kitchen she is usually lying on the floor on the other side of the dining room. She always seems to have one eye open. She’s solid black with dark brown eyes. I can only see a sparkle where her eyes are and they are always watching me.

Frodo and Nyx were best friends…
until they weren’t

Nyx, pronounced neeks, came into my life on November 1, 2020.  She was a year and a half old. I had just lost my German shepherd, Hercules (Herc), two weeks prior. My daughter, Charlie, found her for me. I almost didn’t bring her home because she was very anxious and wouldn’t come to me. I’m not sure what happened to her in her first year and a half but whatever it was, it messed her up good. Within a day though, she came to me…even with her new name. Her original name was Cardi Flea, which I happily kicked to the curb. Nyx and I played a lot of fetch and tug-of-war, her favorite games.

she found a “stick” to play fetch

At the time, I was single and my two youngest daughters were living with me. It took two years before they could even touch her. Nyx is a one person dog and I was/am her person. She’s just now allowing most people to touch her. In the last two months, she’s been getting excited when grandkids come over.

I realize that she needed me as much as I needed her all those years ago. And that fact still remains the same.

A blessing this day, however simple this may seem, is my dog, Nyx.

I’m a mom of six amazing kids. They have blessed me with six grandchildren. I love the outdoors. I am a country girl through and through. There I find a closeness with God and am inspired. Writing is my passion.

    1. Thank you! We kind of rescued each other. Frodo lives with my daughter now. He’s the most vocal cat I’ve ever known. He screams at you until you go and watch you eat. 😂
